Terror Plot Has Marks of Al-Qaeda, Chertoff Says

The 21 terrorist suspects arrested in the U.K. overnight had a ``well-advanced plan'' to detonate electronic devices or liquid explosives disguised as beverages onboard U.S.-bound aircraft, a sophisticated plot suggestive of al-Qaeda, U.S. officials said.

``This operation is in some respects suggestive of an al- Qaeda plot,'' Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said said at a news conference in Washington.

FBI Director Robert Mueller and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, appearing with Chertoff, drew the same conclusion. ``This had the earmarks of an al-Qaeda plot,'' Mueller said. ``A plot of this sophistication is suggestive of al-Qaeda tactics,'' said Gonzales.

Chertoff said U.S. security is being tightened ``to make sure there are no remaining threats out there.''

New images of Iraqi prisoner abuse aired


WASHINGTON -- New photos emerged Wednesday that showed U.S. soldiers abusing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in 2003, and Bush administration officials warned that they could add to Muslim anger at the United States.

The previously unpublished images were first broadcast by the Australian Special Broadcasting Service's "Dateline" program and then were quickly picked up by other news organizations in the United States and abroad.

Hurricane Wilma hit Florida

As hurricane Wilma churns its way northeastward, Floridians must now to assess the damage the storm left behind, mourn the six who died, and start the repair process.

Arriving as a Category 3 hurricane, Wilma made a seven-hour sprint across lower Florida, starting in the southwest and moving to the more heavily populated areas around Miami and Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic coast.
Wilma had weakened to a Category 2 storm while over land but regained its Category 3 status in the afternoon as it swirled out over the Atlantic Ocean.

Pakistan Death Toll

Pakistan's military spokesman has said an entire generation of young people has been wiped out in the areas worst hit by a massive earthquake. Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan, quoted by the AFP news agency, said children had been the biggest casualties.

The death toll has soared to 30,800 in the aftermath of the worst earthquake to hit Pakistan, as nations around the world try to get aid to the northern parts of the devastated country and to Kashmir. Some where the the toll is said to be more than 43000

North Pakistan hit by EarthQuake

Hundreds of people are feared dead and several villages wiped out in north Pakistan in the country's worst earthquake in 20 years, according to Pakistan's interior minister.A powerful quake hit several parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and northern India this morning. It measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, according to the US Geological Survey.
The epicentre of the quake was at Shipal Masjid, 95 km north-northeast of Islamabad.In Pakistan's capital Islamabad, buildings shook and walls swayed for about a minute just before 9 am local time.
